Minoxidil Foam – Reversing Hair Loss

Minoxidil as a Hair Loss Treatment

Minoxidil FoamMinoxidil is basically a vasodilator; a chemical that dilates the veins so that oxygenated blood flows freely to all organs. Minoxidil started out as a treatment for high blood pressure and was taken orally, however, a very pleasant side effect was noticed, hair growth and thickening of hair.

So to benefit from this, Minoxidil foam was developed to treat hair loss specifically. The 5% Minoxidil solution is suitable for men and not recommended for women. For women a 2% Minoxidil solution is designed.

How Does Minoxidil Work?

The working of Minoxidil is not very clear. Minoxidil was never meant as a treatment for hair growth and no researches were conducted to see the cause and effect. The hair factor was merely noticed as a side effect of the oral Minoxidil blood pressure treatment. Minoxidil foam is not a permanent solution. Only certain types of hair loss can be treated with Minoxidil and after the use is discontinued, hair loss may resume.

There are some theories on how Minoxidil might promote hair growth. Since it is a potassium channel opener, vasodilator and nitric oxide agonist it increases the blood flow to the hair and thus ensures increased supply of nutrients. The hair follicles are strengthened and thicker and stronger hair replaces the existing hair. Even the bald patches start filling up as the follicles revive and hair re-growth is experienced at varying degrees.

Precautions to be Taken While Using Minoxidil Foam

There are different formulas of Minoxidil for men and women. First of all women should be very careful not to use the men’s formula since it is more potent than the women’s formula. The higher potency will not lead to more results but can be really harmful for the health and cause damage.

There are some side effects associated with the use of Minoxidil that is why in some countries it is not available without prescription. In the countries where it is available without prescription, it is strongly advised that anyone with a medical condition should consult a doctor before using Minoxidil foam.

Minoxidil is not to be used if one has an itchy or irritated scalp because it can lead to an allergic reaction. Minoxidil does not work in case of male pattern baldness, receding hair line or genetic predisposition to baldness.

The results are not quick. One has to use Minoxidil for at least 2 months to see any hair re-growth. In some cases even continuous use for up to 4 months is required. To maintain hair re-growth one must keep on using Minoxidil, once you stop using it the baldness may return.

When to Stop Using Minoxidil?

There are some side effects associated with the usage of Minoxidil. In case any of these side effects, you should stop using it at once and consult your doctor. In some cases the use of Minoxidil can cause hair growth in unwanted places, in that case the usage should be stopped immediately.

It can also cause itching and rash on the scalp. Disuse of the foam will take care of that but if the itching persists, it is advisable to see the doctor. These are some minor side effects. More serious side effects include sudden weight gain, increased heart rate, chest pain, fainting, dizziness etc. In that case you should go to the doctor immediately before the condition gets worse.

Who Should Not Use Minoxidil?

Women should absolutely not use the men’s formula. Pregnant women or nursing mothers should not use any type or potency of Minoxidil. If you are under 18 years of age it is advisable not to use it.

There is a reason why Minoxidil is sold on prescription in many countries. Even if you live in a country where it is available without prescription, you should consult a physician and take advice. Of course a head full of healthy hair will make you look sexy but not at the cost of your health. If your doctor thinks you can use Minoxidil you can benefit from it greatly but to see any real results you have to use the Minoxidil foam twice daily for 2 to 4 months to see any real results. Continuous use is required to maintain the results.
